Divers recovered this ceramic, rectangle-shaped box from the Cirebon / Nan-Han shipwreck off Java's north coast. Scholars believe it was likely used as a headrest or pillow. Produced in China, the box features an antlered animal design on two sides, set against floral patterns. Half of the top is missing, showing the hollow interior.
Chinese ceramics made up 65% of the Cirebon's cargo. Chinese ceramics were China's most valuable and sought-after maritime export during the 10th and 11th centuries CE.
This type of Ceramic is known as Yue Ware. It originates from the province of Zhejiang, which was part of the coastal kingdom of Wuyue (907–978 CE). It was valued internationally from China to Southeast Asia, the Middle East and all the way to East Africa.
Yue ware production reached its peak during the 10th century CE under the Song dynasty (960–1279 CE). Production increased to meet overseas demand. Alongside this box, other Yue Ware ceramics onboard included bowls, teapots and other containers.
