The 1956 Olympic Games took place in Melbourne. However, Australia had a six-month quarantine on horses and subsequently the equestrian events could not be held in the country.

Instead, they took place in the Swedish city of Stockholm and the Organising Committee of the equestrian disciplines at the Games published this poster on a design by John Sjösvärd (1890-1958). Sjösvärd was a Swedish painter of military subjects and equestrian scenes. He was inspired by the famous reliefs of the horsemen on the frieze of the Parthenon temple in the Acropolis, Athens (5th century BCE).

The figure of the horse rider was also the emblem of the Games and was depicted on the obverse of the medals.
