De Prangey made a number of these double-image studies – perhaps to economise with his supply of daguerreotype plates while travelling, or, equally as likely, to unite two complementary views. Here, the bottom image, a broad view of the inner courtyard at the Ibn Tulun Mosque, is taken from an angle that highlights the serene repetition of its pointed arches. Above, we encounter the exterior wall of the courtyard, and a different sort of arch – this one a window designed to filter light to the interior.
