The design of the official torch of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympic Games was inspired by pine branch torches used in the past in Japan. It also recalls the bells found in Buddhist temples, while the hexagonal shape of the body represents snow crystals. The yellow rope wrapped around its lower part is a reference to elements of traditional Japanese design.
The six vertical bands of the torch bear the pictograms of the fifteen sporting events of the Games, as well as the 1998 Nagano emblem, which was inspired by the form of a snowflower.
