The official poster of the Moscow 1980 Olympics features the emblem of the Games. The selection of the logo by young Soviet Vladimir Arsentyev (b. 1951) was the result of an open international call with 26,000 proposals.
The central motif is reminiscent of a stadium racecourse and its ascending top is crowned by a red, five-pointed star - a symbol of communist ideology.
The shape formed by the five main lines has been associated with the Kremlin towers and a group of seven skyscrapers in Moscow, known as the ‘Seven Sisters’, built between 1947 and 1953.
Besides the official design, another 250 different posters were created for the Moscow Olympics and a total of 18,750,000 copies were circulated.
