Sukki is one of the four owl mascots, collectively known as the Snowlets, created for the Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games. Designed by Landor Associates, the Snowlets were inspired by owls, which are widely regarded as symbols of wisdom.

In Greek mythology, the owl is associated with Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The four Snowlets' names were chosen from among 47,484 suggestions.
