Four Squares by Qatari artist Yousef Ahmad goes beyond a traditional canvas painting. It was created in the 1990s, a time when the artist began to explore more experimental methods.

Ahmad produced this piece using a variety of materials, examining their meaning and connecting their spiritual qualities with their physical presence. The work aims to establish a contemplative atmosphere.

Ahmad began with a mesh base, painted a deep and weathered blue-tone grey tone. The surface was distressed and marked with scattered scribbles. He added frayed rope, chipped wood, and burnt paper fragments to build upon the mesh. The result is an artwork that feels sculpted rather than painted.
