The painting Composition exemplifies how Arabic script became a powerful source of experimentation with abstraction in the postcolonial era. Among the artists who advanced this approach in the Gulf, Yousef Ahmad developed a distinctly Qatari form by grounding the Arabic letters in local materials and visual traditions. In this work, he carves into a canvas and he applies a restrained palette of greys. Arabic calligraphy emerges through subtle tonal variations, while delicate accents of blue and green bring the forms to life. Integrated into the textured surface rather than set apart from it, the script evokes the geological character of the landscape, creating a quiet yet compelling presence that demonstrates the relationship between language, material and place.
