The renowned Qatari artist Yousef Ahmad has spent decades experimenting with paper, line and the art of Hurufiyya. A Person and Letters presents a dense, layered composition built through the accumulation of repeated marks and overlapping forms. Its muted palette of earthy browns, greys and blacks creates a textured field from which bold, elongated black forms emerge at the centre of the composition. Ahmad incorporates newspaper clippings, leaving visible the traces of printed text and the irregular edges of torn paper The sweeping black forms recall the movement and fluidity of Arabic letters, while the repetition of marks across the surface creates a rhythmic quality that invites contemplation. By making the processes of tearing, layering, and mark-making visible, the work draws attention to both its materiality and the artistic process.
