The pioneering contemporary Qatari artist Yousef Ahmad developed a distinctive visual vocabulary in the 1980s and 1990s, using letterforms as a vehicle for emotional expression. Although highly condensed, the letters appear on the surface as impressions of illegible characters, evoking a contemplative and introspective quality. In Discussion, black and white calligraphic forms overlap and intersect, creating a tense visual dialogue across the perfectly square canvas. The densely layered forms challenge the legibility of the script, shifting the viewer’s attention from the meaning of individual letters to their visual and expressive qualities. The contrast between black and white intensifies the sense of movement, while the interlocking forms suggest an ongoing exchange between opposing voices or ideas. Through this interplay of form, rhythm and space, Ahmad transforms Arabic script into an abstract language of gesture and emotion.
