In the 1970s, Yousef Ahmad, a pioneer Qatari artist, extensively experimented with Hurufiyya, an art movement and practice that utilises the abstract quality of the Arabic letters which had been spreading widely across the Arab world since the 1960s. This movement encouraged Ahmad to reconnect with his early practice as a calligrapher and to explore what could constitute a visual Arab identity.
In Calligraphic Composition, Ahmad creates a stylised pattern of letterforms that is no longer legible. He arranges these alphabetical elements into a harmonious architectural structure portraying a mosque, blending traditional architectural elements, such as the minaret and arches, with alphabetical characters. By transforming letters into abstract visual forms, Ahmad shifts calligraphy from a system of written communication into an expressive artistic language. This work reflects his longstanding interest in connecting cultural heritage with modern visual vocabulary.
