Created for the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games, this torch was designed by Japanese industrial designer Sori Yanagi. Its aluminium alloy holder supported a stainless-steel-clad combustion tube developed through extensive testing.

Engineers sought a flame that could be easily ignited, withstand wind and rain, and remain safe during the relay.

Carrying the Olympic flame from Olympia to Tokyo, the torch became a symbol of Japan’s first Olympic Games and international re-emergence following the Second World War.
