The small size of this jug and its decoration make it a delicate piece of tableware. It has three rounded handles on the shoulder and is entirely covered with an opaque glaze on the inside and out, now stained grey. The cobalt-blue decoration has been reconstructed as an oval above two curling branches, probably a plant motif, and is repeated between each of the three handles. A bright green vertical line runs down the outside of each handle.
Originally this jug would have looked bright and striking, with dark blue-and-green painted designs against a white or cream colour. It could have been a ‘table vinegar pot’ used to contain sweet and sour sauces that were very popular in the 9th century, known from ancient cookery books. The painted design and technology indicate that this was manufactured either in Iraq or Iran.
