Stuart Devlin (1932-2018) was a celebrated Australian coin designer and jeweller. He designed coins for many countries and the Sydney 2000 Olympics coin series.
The Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint implemented the Coin Programme for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. They produced 8 gold, 16 silver, and 28 bronze coins.
This poster depicts one of the five-dollar Silver Proof Coins featuring a Kookaburra bird, native to Australia. The Kookaburra was the inspiration for ‘Olly’, one of the three mascots of the Sydney 2000 Olympics. The bird is bordered by the flowers and leaves of the waratah (from the Aboriginal word warada), an impressive plant of the country. Thus, the overall design highlights the environmental richness of the Australian continent.
