This silver medal was awarded to first–place finishers at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Designed by French sculptor Jules–Clément Chaplain, the obverse depicts Zeus holding a globe topped by Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory, while the reverse features the Acropolis and an inscription commemorating the International Olympic Games in Athens. In the inaugural modern Olympics, first–place medals were made of silver rather than gold.
