Created for the second Zappas Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1870, this Class A silver winner’s medal represents an important stage in the nineteenth-century revival of the Olympic tradition.
Designed by French medalist Désiré-Albert Barre and produced by the Monnaie de Paris, it was among the awards presented to successful competitors.

The Games were supported by the legacy of Evangelis Zappas (1800 – 1865) and held at the Panathenaic Stadium, helping establish traditions that preceded the first modern Olympic Games of 1896.
