The 1924 Summer Olympics took place in Paris, which became the first city to host them for a second time (after 1900). They were also the last Olympics organised under the presidency of the father of the modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin (1896–1925).
Amongst 150 submitted designs, the Organising Committee chose two posters to promote the Games (see also QOSM.2013.6.88). The one shown here, by French artist Jean Droit (1884-1961), is now accepted as the official poster of the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. It shows a group of athletes making the Olympic salute. This official greeting strongly resembled what later became the Nazi salute, and after World War II it fell out of use and was never replaced by the International Olympic Committee.
Droit used the French flag as background. In front of the athletes, the palm leaves symbolise victory. To the left is the coat of arms of Paris.
