These ivory bracelets bear traditional lines and dotted motifs in black pigment. This decoration is characteristic of the Fur people from Darfur.
Sudan has a long history in the trade and use of ivory. In ancient Nubia, present-day Sudan, ivory, along with gold, symbolised prestige and power. For this reason, it was often used in jewellery. Sudanese artisans crafted bracelets, anklets, and pendants from ivory that signified wealth, fertility, and marital eligibility. Ivory was also worn as an amulet to protect against evil spirits.
Today, the international ban on ivory trade has ended its use in jewellery. Examples such as these exist mainly as museum objects or as heirlooms preserved by elders.
