The Khalifa Olympic Stadium (now known as Khalifa International Stadium) in Doha was inaugurated in 1976 in order to host the 4th Arabian Gulf Cup. It was named in honour of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani (1932 – 2016), Qatar’s Amir at the time. The opening ceremony included gymnastics displays by schoolchildren, as can be seen in this photo.
At the time of its opening, Khalifa Stadium could host 20,000 spectators. It was renovated for the 2006 Asian Games and again for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and can today accommodate more than 45,000 visitors.
