The torch of the London 2012 Olympic Games is characterised by its golden colour and the 8,000 small holes that cover its surface. They represent the 8,000 torchbearers that carried the Olympic flame from Athens to London.
British designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby created it. Its triangular shape was inspired by the three Olympics held in the UK (1908, 1948, and 2012). It was also linked to the three-word Olympic motto in Latin, ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’, which means 'Faster, Higher, Stronger'.
The torch only weighs 800 grams and its perforated design ensured it remained cool throughout the torch relay.
