Divers recovered these four gold fragments from the Cirebon / Nan-Han shipwreck in the Java Sea. The ship's cargo contained a notable amount of gold, which scholars believe originated on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Sumatra had large gold deposits, which were used to meet the demands of the Javanese market in the 10th century CE.

Gold fragments were often sold in their natural form, which could then be used in jewellery. These gold fragments have been decorated with floral patterns and set with two purple cabochon  gemstones in filigree.
