Local textile patterns inform this abstract interpretation of heritage symbols by multidisciplinary Qatari artist and designer Wadha Al-Sulaiti, demonstrating how cultural identity can serve as a means of contemporary exploration. Paisley, alongside dotted, floral and geometric shapes found in women’s traditional garments across the Gulf, translates ancestral visual vocabularies into a living decorative language. With a deliberate focus on texture, the work invites calm engagement with its patterns and motifs, interweaving them harmoniously to formulate a richly ornamented world of femininity. A delicate palette of yellow with hints of gold and dusty purple throughout, combined with rubbed charcoal-black scraped across the surface, creates a dynamic sense of expression across the composition. Visible and fading motifs further evoke the shifting nature of memory. Rather than presenting heritage as fixed, the artist allows familiar forms to fade, overlap and re-emerge, suggesting that cultural memory remains fluid and continually renewed.
