Divers recovered 627 Chinese coins, alongside goods from India, Africa and the Middle East, from the Cirebon / Nan-Han shipwreck. The majority of these coins or fragments, including this example, are round with a square cutout, and feature Chinese characters.

These coins played a crucial role in dating the shipwreck, which is believed to have sunk in the Java Sea around 970 CE. Scholars have also used the coins to hypothesise about early Indian Ocean maritime trade.
