In this vertical panoramic study of the north entrance to the Ibn Tulun Mosque, de Prangey managed to frame the plate with many of the structure’s identifying features: the rosette inlay beside the pointed arch, an inset screened window, the parapet crenellations, rectangular support piers and an accompanying sculpted pilaster. The focus of the image, however, is on the vast swathe of deteriorating plaster on the central wall, which to a contemporary viewer appears quite abstract; most likely, de Prangey was interested in construction materials and techniques, and also documenting the state of the oldest surviving mosque in Cairo.
