Nasrid Pyxis

This pyxis is one of the few recorded examples of Nasrid metalwork pyxides. While most Spanish earlier examples of the 4th century AH/10th century CE are in ivory, the existing later examples in metalwork show different features. This pyxis’ decoration consists of eight-pointed star patterns engraved on the copper and inlaid with silver, enclosing interlaced palmettes and loops with chevron-type friezes on the upper and lower part of the box. Such decoration is representative of the geometric motifs used on various media at the Nasrid period, either on textiles, woodwork or manuscripts. Destined to hold fragrances or cosmetics, pyxides are luxurious objects produced in royal workshops for high members of the elite or as royal gifts.
