Lebanese artist Saloua Raouda Choucair drew inspiration from many fields. These included science, mathematics, Islamic art, philosophy, and Arabic literature. Throughout her long career, she explored varied materials and worked on many different scales. This artwork, entitled “Trajectory of the Arch”, was created between 1968–1974. It is part of a group of works made by the artist during the age of moon landing and early space travel. Choucair had studied natural sciences in the 1930s and was deeply interested in physics and the future. These interests shaped her sculptural experiments, especially her use of elements such as air and water. This rare work demonstrates that approach by using swaying nylon threads to suggest airflow and currents.
