Coins of the Qaramita or Qarmatians are very rare, especially those of gold. The gold coins, dinars in Arabic, are usually very-well struck, whereas silver coins, or dirhams, are poorly minted. Qarmatian coins were issued in Syria and Palestine in Damascus, Tiberias and al-Ramla, but rare pieces from Mecca are also known for the years 359 AH / 969 CE, 360 AH / 970 CE and 362 AH / 971 CE. An identifying feature of the coins from Mecca is verse 17: 81-82 of the Qur’an inscribed on the reverse, “Truth has arrived, and Falsehood perished: for Falsehood is (by its nature) bound to perish; we set down in the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe.” They are were all struck bearing the name of the Qarmatian council, called al-sadat, on the coin.
