People + Line, a large artwork by the Iraqi artist Saadi al-Kaabi, exemplifies his mastery in conveying strong ideas and emotions using simple shapes and a restrained colour palette. At the centre of the artwork, a crowd of faceless figures stands close together. Their tight, shared posture suggests anxiety and a common experience. The layered bodies form repeating shapes that increase the tension of the scene. The imagery carries symbolic meaning, evoking a narrative rooted in shared history.
Al-Kaabi often uses art to reconnect with his cultural roots through a visual language shaped by diverse layers of cultural heritage. The simplified figures, with their broad shoulders, recall ancient Mesopotamian sculptures. Equally significant are the geometric squares and dense calligraphic forms, which echo patterns commonly found in Islamic architecture. The shades of yellow and blue draw inspiration from the desert landscapes of the Arabian Peninsula, grounding the work in its regional environment.
