The 1924 Summer Olympics took place in Paris, which became the first city to host them for a second time (after 1900). They were also the last Olympics organised under the presidency of the father of the modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin (1896–1925).
Amongst 150 submitted designs, the Organising Committee chose two posters to promote the Games (see also QOSM.2013.6.89). The one shown here is by Italian illustrator and cartoonist Italo Orsi (1889-1947). In the foreground, a javelin thrower reflects, through his posture and the dynamism of the design, the Olympic motto Citius, Altius, Fortius (‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’), which was used for the first time at the 1924 Olympics. In the background, a view of Paris features the well-known monuments of the city.
