Ismail Azzam’s practice is characterised by meticulously rendered portraits and depictions of nature, through which he examines themes of identity, memory, and legacy. Working with careful attention to detail and a deep sensitivity toward his subjects, Azzam uses portraiture not merely as a means of representation, but also as a way to preserve personal histories and to reflect on the cultural narratives embedded within them.
The work Ismail Fattah forms part of a larger series in which Azzam commemorates pioneering modern Arab artists who have passed away. Drawing on a personal encounter with Fattah, Azzam’s portrait extends beyond physical likeness to capture the artist’s emotional and psychological presence. Through subtle details and a contemplative approach, Azzam pays tribute to fellow Iraqi artist Fattah’s significant contribution to Arab modernism while reflecting on the continuity of artistic dialogue and the enduring legacy of artists across the region.
