Egyptian artist and educator Gazbia Sirry often painted scenes of both rural and city life, portraying these subjects with a critical eye. Her work reflects everyday life and social conditions in Egypt, particularly around the time of the 1952 Egyptian Revolution and in the decades that followed. This small-scale painting focuses on a group of houses depicted in a grid-like layout. The colours are soft with shades of beige, grey, blue, and rusty orange. This scene draws attention to the home as an important part of city life and shared community. Throughout her life, Sirry observed class divisions across Cairo’s neighbourhoods. She expressed these realities through both abstract and figurative styles, offering a visual critique of power structures and social systems.
