The first FIFA World Cup™ tournament took place in Uruguay in 1930. Uruguay was chosen as host due to the national team’s success as Olympic football champions in 1924 and 1928, and in honour of the country’s centenary celebrations. Only 13 nations took part in the competition, including four European countries whose teams travelled to Uruguay by ship. All the matches took place in the capital, Montevideo. The final, between Uruguay and Argentina, took place in the newly built Estadio Centenario (Centennial Stadium), and Uruguay became the first world champions, beating their neighbours 4–2.
The cover of this programme bears the logo of the construction company Francisco Susena e Hijos, most probably the sponsor for the printing.
