This round open basket with a leather conical lid is made from coiled plant stems. The stems are wound and stitched with strips of palm leaf, with one coil joined to the next. A loop and wire hook serve as a closing mechanism and are knotted to the inside of the lid and basket. A tanned piece of goatskin or sheepskin is stitched on to the basket with a leather cord, covering the bottom and sides, and two woven leather cords are knotted into the sides forming loops for hanging.
It is thought this type of basket was made in Al-Hasa, Saudi Arabia, and commonly used by tribes who moved between eastern Saudi Arabia and Qatar. They were typically used to store and transport kitchen items.
