Hussain al-Sunni is a prominent Bahraini modern artist whose work is characterised by prolific experimentations with form and colour. His early artistic sensibilities have been shaped by the modern Iraqi art movement, a consequence of his studies at the Institute of Fine Art in Baghdad.

Hurufiyat Arabic Calligraphy highlights al-Sunni's unique approach to creating a signature style, incorporating the art of hurufiyya (a modern approach to the use of Arabic letters in art) with vibrant colours. Like many of his contemporaries in the region, al-Sunni incorporated Arabic letters in an attempt to create a visual cultural identity and explore the mysticism of Arabic letterforms. In this painting, the artist uses overlapping letters and words to create a sense of depth and contemplation, as the words oscillate between the legibility and the illegibility; Hurufiyat Arabic Calligraphy is a testament to the artist's excellence in combining primary colours with a harmonious balance that evokes emotional sensation.
