This early 19th-century watercolour of a Red-bellied Macaw (Orthopsittaca manilata) is attributed to Jacques Barraband (1767/8–1809), the leading French bird painter of his era. Barraband was known for the elegant, lifelike studies he produced for the folios of the noted ornithologist François Levaillant. This unsigned drawing served as the model for plate 7 in Levaillant's Histoire naturelle des perroquets (Natural History of Parrots).
