When Alia Falah Al Shammari and her Al Khor teammates walked onto the pitch for the 2011-12 Women’s Football League finals, they were entering Qatar’s sports history. They were part of a cohort of pioneering female footballers in Qatar’s first-ever Women’s Football League tournament.
Al Shammari was named player of the tournament and became Director of Women’s Sports at Al Khor in 2013.

More recently, Al Khor were winners of the Women’s Football League in 2021 and 2022. But women’s football in Qatar is still an emerging sport. Growing numbers of women and girls are getting involved in football. There are female coaches, officials, and private female-only facilities, though more are needed.

Supporting women’s football is as much a global issue as a local issue. FIFA has identified the women’s game as the biggest growth opportunity in football and is investing in tailor-made programmes to bring female football into the mainstream.
The world’s best football players came to Qatar in 2022, inspiring girls and boys alike. Will Qatar bid to host the Women’s World Cup one day - giving the Nation’s women a shot at glory?
